Most of the time when we develop app in Android we test it using either a device that we have or we use the emulator. The emulator is something that most developers will try to stay away from because it is very slow and does not provide lot of functionality that normal devices provide. Performance is the key issue for developers not to use emulator. There is good news as the emulator that comes with r17 of the SDK now comes with built-in GPU support which means that it will run app more faster than before. The main key things that you will get out of the new emulator are:

  • OpenGL games can now run inside the emulator
  • Support for Bluetooth and NFC will be coming soon
  • Hardware floating point operation available for system images since Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0)
