2nd Generation Nexus 7

With the Google I/O 2013 coming this week lots of rumors are circling about the latest Nexus devices and Android. The latest rumors is about the specification of 2nd generation Nexus 7, which will have the following:

7in full HD (1920 x 1200 pixels)
Snapdragon S4 Pro quad core
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
5MP rear and 2MP front-facing camera
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC capability.
4,000 mAh battery

What is attractive is the pricing reported to be $199. Compared to the existing Android devices, this is by far will be unbelievably cheap with very good quality build. The one thing that was not reported is RAM and storage size which I think will be 1GB and 32GB.

Looking at the trend I think this time Google will not release any 8GB version and most probably neither 16GB version, if the price is true to be $199. We will also if they are going to release 3G version.

Huawei Ascend P6

New photos released by nowhereelse.fr shows that Huawei is preparing the thinnest smartphone in the world and it’s called P6-U06, measuring at 6.18mm weighing 120g. The phone has the following specification:

4.7 inch TFT screen with a resolution of 1.280x720p
Quad-core processor at 1.5Ghz
2GB of RAM
5MP camera
32GB of internal storage

It does carry some serious hardware inside, so this model should not be taken too lightly and could potentially be a game changer in the category of thinnest smartphone.

Never expect that will be reading about the release of the latest Android firmware from WSJ, according to the news AllWinner is now releasing Android 4.2.2 updates to it’s customer who are using A31,A31s and A20 devices, which means pretty much the latest Quad Core latest devices will have the latest Android version.

The rumours mill are hard at work between Google and LG. Google’s executive are on a tour to South Korea and they are doing visit to LG, which could means that they are talking about future partnership for the next Nexus lineup of devices or it is also possible that they are discussion on new Android class of devices which are work in progress or maybe still in research stage, it can be any of those. Nevertheless, this shows that Google are moving aggresively with Android and it’s future and we will for sure see new devices in the coming years.

Even NASA agrees that Android open source nature is a good thing for future and this is proven by using Android phones to take pictures from the space to be sent back to earth. This is small step for Android in the right direction, as NASA is now looking at evaluating consumer grade product for their exploration which can open the door to limitless opportunity. NASA managed to piece together the pictures taken by the Android phones. The smartphones used was Nexus One and Nexus S.

HTC is going to present in the upcoming San Fransisco Android User Group with the topic covering Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Open GL ES 3.0. Does this gives us in the upcoming ability of Android 5.0 (Key Lime Pie) ? maybe or maybe not, but nevertheless this is exciting times for Android users as this shows that vendors are working hard to deliver new technology to Android world.

$50 Android Smartphone in 2013

There is an interesting discussion in Bloomberg with Marc Andreessen and he pointed out that 2013 will be the year of $50 Android phone, which is not far fetch from the truth but at the same time is scary. Looking around us we can see lots of smartphones popping out everyday from China and other country in the world. China especially are churning Android phones like there are no tomorrow and looking at the drastic reduction of prices in some of these smartphones it comes as no surprise that you can pick up very cheap smartphones running Android, but not the latest version of Android mind you. Nevertheless, what Andressen is saying is not far from what’s happening but currently this is not the norm only exception.

So why $50 smartphones ? Google would like to see Android in the hands of everybody in the world and in order to do this, phones need to be dirt cheap so anybody can afford an Android phone. This potentially open up Android into a different world like we never seen before, with Android being used by more and more people this also means that the sky is the limit to what kind of application will be built in the future.
